Rethymno 

Rethymnon is built between the two largest cities of Crete. In the east is Heraklion (80km) and in the west is Chania (60km). 

The city of Rethymnon is ideal for the visitors who wish not only to explore the rich culture and heritage of Crete but also for those who want to enjoy the sandy beaches, the Mediterranean climate and the traditional Cretan gastronomy. 

The Fortezza Fortress  is one of the most famous buildings in Rethymnon. It was built by the Venetians in order to protect the city from the pirates and the Turks and has played an important role in the history of Rethymnon. Today the outer fortifications of the Fortezza are preserved intact and some buildings are still being restored, enabling guests to travel back to the Venetian times. The view from the top of the Fortezza Fortress is magnificent, especially during the night. 

Rethymnon Old town is one of the most well-preserved towns of the Renaissance. Right in the heart of Rethymnon it combines the oriental features of the Turkish period with the Venetian architecture. Despite the damages of the Second World War the Old Town of Rethymnon is still a living museum of monuments. Allow yourself to get lost in the small streets and explore the city. 

 The Venetian harbor of Rethymnon was of great strategic importance during the Venetian period. Although it has undergone numerous reconstructions, the Venetian harbor can take you back the Venetian days. Visit the famous lighthouse. Gaze at the small fishing boats and enjoy your meal in one of the traditional taverns. 

Venetian Loggia is an elegant building of the 16th century and was used as an elite gentlemen’s club. Today you can find there the local information office as well as a selling point of the tickets for the archaeological museum. 

The Archaeological Museum of Rethymnon is located near the Fortezza fortress and houses exhibits from the Neolothic to Roman period that were found in the land of Rethymnon. 

Arkadi 

Arkadi Monastery is located near the village of Amnatos and is only 23 km east of Rethymno. Built on the edge of a high plateau in an altitude of 500m the monastery of Arkadi is full of olive groves, vineyards and oak trees. Also, around the monastery there are many charming chapels and of course the Arkadi gorge. Although the monastery of Arkadi was built in 1587 it has been well known from the events that took place in November 1866 when Crete rebelled against the Turks. 

Chania 

The Venetian harbor of Chania with the famous lighthouse is the trademark of Chania. The harbor is full of historical memories and waits to be explored by its visitors. There are plenty of restaurants, cafeterias and bars in order to make the guests’ visit more pleasant and comfort. 

The Venetian Lighthouse of Chania is one of the most visited places in Chania during the day and among the most romantic spots during the night when the lighthouse shines in the dark. It is located at the entrance of the port and is considered to be the symbol of Chania. 

Ancient Aptera was one of the most significant cities in Western Crete. Its ruins are in a very beautiful location surrounded by olive grooves and offering an amazing view to all directions including the Cretan Sea, the Souda Bay, the valley of Apokoronas and the White Mountains.

Heraκlion 

Knossos, the Minoan Palace, is probably the most famous archaeological site of Crete and is located 5 km southeast of Heraklion. Knossos was the seat of the legendary king Minos and the main center of power in Crete. The first palace was built around 1700 BC. It was rebuilt and destroyed again by fire in 1350 BC. Due to its construction, the luxury of materials and the pioneering techniques, Knossos palace is the monumental symbol of the Minoan civilization. 

The majority of the Minoan artifacts are hosted in the Heraklion Archaelogical Museum that is the largest museum of Crete and one of the most important museums of Greece. 

The venetian fortress of Koules the dominant building in the entrance of the Venetian harbor of Heraklion. Although today it is known by its Turkish name, Koules, the Venetians used to called it “Sea Fortress”. Koules is ideal for a walk since the visitors can gaze at the Sea of Crete and get a glimpse of the Venetian glory. 

Samaria 

Hike through one of the worlds greatest natural wonders. From Omalos at a hight of 1235 m the gorge of Samaria cuts 16 km through the landscape. Crossing the gorge is a demanding physical activity and it requires a robust health. If you feel fit for the challenge, wear hiking shoes, bring a snack and prepare yourself for a beautiful nature experience.
